From the start, Augie's memoir is filled with rich vocabulary and literary, historical, and religious allusions. The narrative is descriptive, and Bellow takes special care to explain Augie's use of words and phrases while he is in Mexico, utilizing this speech to add local color. As a result, the reader is able to envision the opulent buildings, twisted mountains, and flaming oil-covered waves.... as if they were there.
