The conflicting newspaper headlines of the 1880's demonstrate how difficult it is to truly understand what transpired between Sara and Theo at the Camden -- whether at that time or a hundred years later, as Bailey attempts to do. First, Nellie Bly's investigative reportage tells the truth about the dire conditions at the Blackwell Island Asylum, allowing Sara to be freed (247-259). However, a later newspaper article, covering Sara's supposed murder of Theo, will make erroneous reference to Sara's poor mental health (161).
