I think Juniors feelings change as he matures and progresses through the book. Initially Junior laments about being poor, Indian, alcoholism and being stuck on a reserve. He has few role models other than his grandma and only one friend named Rowdy. As Junior matures and grows, he realizes there is more to his life than he first thought.
