Allan's one passion in life -- drinking excessively whenever he can -- is matched by Julius and they instantly bond as a result. They drink until they pass out, which inadvertently leads to Bolt's death, left confined in the freezer overnight. This kind of black comic approach is key to understanding much of the richness of the book, as the author uses it frequently to resolve seemingly impossible and/or improbable situations.
