How does the author use metaphor in the book, That Summer: A Novel?

Weiner uses a variety of metaphors in her writing to create a visual image of the things she writes about. For instance, After the rape, Diana is described as feeling “as if she was moving through the world like a snail or a turtle whose shell had been removed” (24). These comparisons demonstrate how small and vulnerable Diana feels. Another metaphor describes the way Daisy believes Vernon sees himself and his life. In his apartment, she sees Vernon’s recliner and imagines “Vernon Shoemaker sitting in his chair like a king on his throne” (153).
