How does the author use foreshadowing in That Summer?

Sumner acts oddly when Haven suggests that Ashley would love to hear from him, foreshadowing the truth behind their break-up. Ashley also comments that Haven didn't know Sumner like she did..... foreshadowing her eventual revelation of the facts.
