Why does Nick survive the attempt on his life by the nico-terrorists?

The nico-terrorists that abduct Nick cover his body with 40 nicotine patches. That much nicotine at one time would kill most people, but Nick is such a heavy smoker that he can withstand it. In essence, smoking saves Nick's life in this section.
