What is the theme in Tex by S. E. Hinton?

Like most of Hinton's novels, Tex is about coming of age. Tex must go through that awkward stage of adolescent to young man without a classic parental figure. Tex handles his many conflicts by avoiding them, hiding from them, and compensating for them in unproductive ways.
