What does Tex mean when he says "If you don't know any better, you'd think stores multiplied like rabbits"?

Tex is referring to the "number" of stores available. He'd just left the mall and was standing looking across the street at another grouping of stores. In his eyes, the number of stores multiple like baby bunnies. Rabbits are well known to have numerous litters and large numbers of babies.
