Classic novels are called 'classics' because their themes, characters, and issues are universal and not tied to a specific era. Tess of D'urbervilles themes are that of love and loss (which all can identify with). Likewise, the stylistic devices of theme, imagery, metaphor, similes and other are utilized, as well as plot structure that we still recognize and use today.
