The symbolism and allusion of 'the names of Angel, Clare, and Mercy Chant'.

Angel is self-evident. Is he an angelic man who has come to save Tess? Clare and his wife intend Mercy from Emminster to marry Angel. Other than the religious allusions, I'm not sure of anything else.
