A pistol was left in the management office of Muddy's by the former owner, but John never takes it out of the drawer of his desk. At the end of the novel, Carl Taft steals the gun from John's desk and threatens him with it to get back his drugs. When John tells Carl he flushed the drugs, Carl shoots him in the neck with the pistol.
