Tommy, a young man from New York City who has recently come into considerable money, insists that he and his wife begin attending concerts at Carnegie Hall. Although Tommy is by all accounts a kind man, he is also a stickler for rules and order, prompting him to monitor the audience closely while they listen to the orchestral music. When Tommy discovers that a man seated near him, Arthur Fein, is secretly recording the concerts on a tape recorder, he becomes increasingly fixated and incensed and ultimately elects to report Arthur to the authorities.
