When Smitty's wife, Jennifer, accidentally gets in touch with Jerry and informs him that Smitty is a recovering alcoholic, the almost magical quality that Jerry has begun to associate with Smitty's social skills takes on a different tinge and begins to come off as uncomfortable and depressing. Since Smitty is unwilling to pull himself away from the bar or from the social interactions that he has been having there. Thus, by the conclusion of the story, Smitty's relationships—with alcohol, with strangers, with his wife—begin to look more like urgent dependency than easy self-assurance, and Jerry's view of Smitty changes for the worse.
