Timothy's lack of motivation prompts him to begin copying down the signatures of his favorite writers as a form of inspiration, something that eventually catches the eye of a man named Mr. Pennybrook, who owns a nearby bookstore. Mr. Pennybrook invites Timothy to work in his shop under the auspices of wanting to help Timothy's writing career, but it quickly becomes apparent that Mr. Pennybrook intends to turn Timothy into a master forger.
