Although Los Angeles in general is the subject of focus in "Eve in Hollywood," Hollywood itself and its relationship with the film industry is also a prominent figure throughout the piece, which mostly takes place in and around Beverly Hills and Hollywood. Towles is extremely interested in the vicissitudes of the film industry, particularly in the lives of women, noting that there is a constant revolving door of literature attempting to discredit or scandalize various people in the city, but that this cycle is also prompted by the lack of economic opportunity to the underclasses in Hollywood; Litsky and Wendell, for instance, are not motivated by cruelty so much as by the belief that destroying Olivia's career is the only way to advance their own. Thus, Towles focuses on the specific politics and careers of Hollywood as a means of deepening his critique of wealth and the ways in which it comes to bear on individual lives.
