The narrator dreamed that she was in the Cotton Club. Cab Calloway, Harold and Fayard were there. The narrator stood on a podium. The narrator dreamed that everyone was elegant and had never felt pain. That they had never been called ugly or stupid, never entered theaters by back doors, never drank from separate water fountains, or had to sit in the back of the bus. But when the orchestra played, the narrator found that she could not sing.
