Miriam was the narrator's mother's partner. Miriam was a very quiet person. She never spoke about herself, only about the narrator's mother. The narrator discovered that she was Afro-Cuban from Lewisham. That she had worked in international aid, but taught at Queen Mary's and had been writing about the disapora.
