In Early Days, Chapter 3, why did the narrator have to stay out of their flat until dinner time?

Saturday's were the narrator's mother's day off. It was a day off from being with her husband and daughter. She would use the day to study. So on Saturdays the narrator and her father had to stay out of their flat until dinner time.
