References to music throughout the novel symbolize emotion. Towards the start of the novel, Dawn tells Momo that music is often prophetic, in that it has the power to connect the individual to everything she has ever felt and will ever feel in the future. Indeed, for Dawn, Momo, Viridiana, and later for Junie, music grants them the capacity to feel and express sentiments that lack linguistic definition.
