Importance of Letters

The characters write letters one to another throughout the novel, and symbolize the untranslatable. After learning that Cassia has no intention of joining him in Chimney Bluffs, Momo begins writing to Viridiana. The letters grant him an outlet to express the things he otherwise cannot express. Later on, Cassia writes Momo three letters that she gives him once they reunite. The letters encompass and convey all of the things she cannot vocalize aloud.
