The wooden legs Grandpa crafts for Junie symbolize transformation. Shortly after seeing Junie swim for the first time, Grandpa realizes all Junie could be and longs to be. He decides to make her the legs so that she might have a better chance of pursuing such inarticulable dreams. Initially, the legs are difficult for Junie to adjust to. Yet they connect her to a version of future self she is gradually becoming.
