Is Doc an outcast, trying to fit in to society in any way?

When he returns from the war, Doc is definitely looking to find a new niche in the world. He is not an outcast, but he is in a state of disarray..... he isn't happy and lacks fulfillment. Doc is looking to find himself....... and in his defense, war changes a man..... sometimes completely. In the end, he begins to recognize that the things the make "him" pull away from the outside world can be found in the fears he carries within himself. It isn't until he sees this that he can begin anew. The loneliness caused by his own fear of living are the cause of his isolation.
