In both scenarios, the men seem more concerned with achieving their own happiness than in the happiness of the narrator. Joe ignores the narrator's concern over the fact that she has been married before and ignores the revelation that she has had a child. In the flashback about the wedding, the narrator is physically ill, but her new husband seems concerned only that the task at hand is completed.
