What images or ideas related to identity do we get in the beginning of the novel?

The nameless narrator and faceless cherub statue are our first clues that the narrator is struggling with her identity. The language barrier and the fact that the townspeople do not know or recognize her also contributes to the idea the the narrator's identity is unclear at the moment.
