Describe the narrator's perception of the townspeople toward her.

The narrator perceives the townspeople are at least distrustful of her and at most openly contemptuous of her. She does not feel as if she belongs anymore, if she ever did. The narrator attempts to speak the language of the townspeople, but even that makes her feel isolated and insufficient. She seems to perceive judgment from the townspeople, but whether that is true or not remains to be seen.
