Why does Jarrett live with his grandparents in the graphic novel, Sunshine?

Jarrett lives with his grandmother and grandfather in Worcester, Massachusetts. He has lived with them since he was a toddler as his dad "took off" before he was born and his mom is "not around much" because of her drug addiction (81).
