How does Private Perry come to rescue Captain Miller in Chapter 14?

When Perry goes to the restroom before they leave, he encounters two men dragging Captain Miller from the room; one of the men turns on Perry with an AK-47 and Perry immediately shoots him and then the other man. Captain Miller is hysterical and in shock; she tells Perry that he stopped the men from raping her.
