Why does Charlie's watch stop working, and what does he do about this?

Charlie's watch stops ticking because Aunt Willie did not wind it for him that morning. Charlie attempts to copy what he has seen Aunt Willie do with the watch, but he accidentally pulls the stem out of the watch.
