In Chapter 22, the swans flying overhead, which are now heavy and awkward where they were graceful in the water, serve as a metaphor for Sara. Sara wanted to be like the swans, to move to a new place and to be beautiful and graceful. Now Sara sees that, like the swans, going home is not such a bad thing and that even swans can be awkward and unattractive sometimes.
