Rawls makes wide use of descriptive imagery in painting a picture of the setting. This area is described in detail; indeed, perhaps one quarter of the novel is spent in describing the beautiful scenery; the silvery river; the forests of sycamore, maple, and oak; and the rich, fertile land.
