Why did Ruth believe that Anton was a good and decent man?

One reason that Ruth believes Anton is a good man is his protectiveness of Patty. When Anton sees Patty's father beating her, his first instinct is to run out from his hiding place and stop him. he stops himself in time, but not before Ruth sees him and comes to see him as a good and decent man.
