Who is Ruth Hughes from Summer of My German Soldier and what is their importance?

Ruth is the maid at the Bergen's home. She is reuted to be great at her job, as well as an excellent cook. It is Ruth that discovers Anton and supports Patty in her desire to hide him. Ruth's son is away fighting in the war, something that stirs her compassion. Ruth does, however, warn Patty that is the long run, Anton may do her more harm than good.
