What metaphors are used in Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess?

One interesting use of language in this novel centers around the idea that Meredith's father was a softball coach. He taught boys in the town how to play softball. He also taught his daughter how to play softball. In one of her memories, Meredith is upset because she can't hit as well as the boys, whom she believes that her father loves better. It is darkly ironic that when Meredith's father tries to rape her a second time, and she defends herself with the Madonna icon, she uses a baseball stance to begin her blow. Through this metaphor, Meredith shows that she uses the skills that her father taught her in softball to protect herself and injure him.
