Hebdige believes the creator of common objects, created them with a particular purpose in mind. The actual use of the object can vary greatly depending on who is using it. For example, when used by a participant of the mass culture, a safety pin can be used to fasten clothing, while a Punker may use the safety pin as a piece of jewelry.
