Jim Butcher uses the most common storytelling structure there is, that of bringing the reader along for the ride as the protagonist experiences the events of the story. By opening the story with a man who seems down and out, needing money, being ridiculed for his chosen profession, and then a caller whose very reluctance discredits him, the reader is drawn into Harry Dresden's life. No sooner does he get off the phone with the reluctant caller, does Harry get summoned to the Madison Hotel by the police to give his opinion on a seemingly paranormal double homicide.
