What does Tom confess to Deel while hunting in "The Stars are Falling"? What happens next?

When they go hunting, Tom confesses that he has been living in Deel's home for some time and after apologizing, shoots Deel in the head. It is getting dark and the shot only grazes his head. Deel wakes in a shallow grave, picks up his gun, left behind in Tom's haste, and goes home where he finds Tom and Mary Lou in his bed. He shoots and kills Mary Lou first, and then Tom.
