Why do some of the soldiers bring a boy to Kahlan and what does she do? How does he respond?

Kahlan goes into her tent to sleep when she is awakened by some of the Galean soldiers. One of the young men that had refused to be lead by a woman is held by several men. Kahlan touches him with her power, and immediately he is her mindless puppet. She asks him to tell everyone what he was going to do and he admits that he was going to warn the neighboring troops that the Galeans were coming and to ask to join them.
