What does Zedd take out of his pocket in Chapter 4 and what does he do with it?

In Chapter 4, Zedd takes a stone, unsure of what it is, out of his pocket and places it on a chain and weaves a magical web around it ensuring that when Richard sees the stone he will be irrevocably drawn to it. Zedd takes the stone on the chain and gives it to Rachel.
