In the book, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, the protagonist, Moby finds out that his best friend, Sarah Byrnes, has been put in a hosptial because she has just stopped talking. Sarah and Moby have been friends because they are both outcasts. Sarah is horribly disfigured from cigarette burns she received when she was three, and Moby is incredibly overweight. Sarah has always been there to support Moby when others were harsh and cruel to him. Now, she needs him, and he is there for her. Moby doesn't know how he can find a way to protect his best friend, and this causes him to go outside of his comfort zone to ask for help and to make new friendships.
