HOW DOES JAMIE ESCALANTE'S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL GO? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ISSUES HE FACES?

Mr. Escalante’s first day of Garfield High School didn’t go as planned. When walking in the classroom, there were people shouting, desks turned in all different directions, and some boys and girls standing in the back. He realized that half the class did not even speak English. So, he made them sit in the front so he could speak to them fluently. During the middle of the class, a young man comes in with two other boys. While the boy gives him smart remarks and eye rolling, Mr. Escalante learns that his name is Angel. Before he knows it, the bell rings and it is time for the students to go to next period. Eager to get out, all the students grab their belongings and head for their next class.
