Why do you think most of the Lawtons converge on Washington, D.C. to be witho Belinda, who has suffered a severe stroke and is not expected to live?

Belinda is probably more of a mother figure to Jason and Diane than their own mother, Carol, who is an active alcoholic and wrapped up in her own situation; therefore, it makes sense that the Lawtons would all feel indebted to Belinda Dupree. Carol Lawton calls Belinda the pillar (meaning most likely the pillar of strength) in the Lawton family. She is gracious enough to acknowledge Belinda's contribution to her family's well being.
