What is the author's tone in Spin by Robert Charles Wilson?

There is a scientific revelation-type tone to the book. Spin's premise is that Earth has now reached a point where its ecology is doomed by human proliferation and technology. The planet is wrapped in a time bubble by an Alien race referred to as the Hypotheticals, whose goal appears to be saving human civilization and providing Earth's inhabitants with a safe way out to a new planet.
