What is known about Spin that would probably cause a general panic in the population of Earth were it to become common knowledge? Is it moral of those "in the know" to keep this information from the general population?

It has been known for a while that if the protective membrane were removed, the rays of the decayed Sun would quickly make life on Earth impossible. At this point, it seems moral in the sense that if it were revealed, there might be a rapid decline in the safety and quality of life on Earth. As long as the scientist have not given up hope of finding a solution to the problem, it seems rational to keep the population ignorant of the real threat.
