Significance of Cup of Pills

This cup of pills represents Brooke’s determination to protect her siblings. Brooke has collected the pills from her mother’s medicine cabinet intending to kill herself. She realizes, however, that if she dies, it will leave her siblings with no one to protect them. After she makes this realization, Brooke dumps the pills down the toilet and flushes them, indicating that she has decided that she will continue to live in order to take care of her brothers and sister.
