The sheets and comforter that Molly and Nikki buy for Brooke are symbols of Molly’s refusal to understand her daughter. Molly reasons that since Earl has moved out, Brooke should no longer be uncomfortable in the house. In an attempt to help, Molly changes the sheets and comforter in Brooke’s room but does not understand that Brooke’s pain lies deeper than just those superficial things.
