Billy Marlon was a high school friend of Keith's who served in Vietnam.When Keith returns to Spencerville, he finds that Billy is an alcoholic. Initially, Keith believes that Billy turned to drink after the war. He later learns that it began when Cliff Baxter used his authority to force Billy's young wife into a sexual relationship.
