Good verses evil is another theme in the book. The author creates a juxtaposition of Jagang verses Richard and Kahlan, as well as introduced the "lurk" and the chimes. The reader is shown what will happen to their society if there is the threat of the chimes. Magic will be destroyed if the chimes are not stopped.
