The influence of western culture, which Ocol wholeheartedly embraces, distances him from his people because he no longer participates in or enjoys the traditions or rituals of his homeland. Ocol's desire to embrace all things western leads him to ostracize his first wife, Lawino, and to condemn his people's ignorance and primitive ways. He is rude and condescending to both his wife and other people.
