How does Susane Colasanti use imagery in Something Like Fate?

In Chapter 13, the art class is studying pointillism. This is a form of art where full images are made of tiny dots. From close range, it doesn't appear like a complete image. It's only when one steps back to see all the dots that the image appears. This imagery is symbolic of Lani and Erin's situation.... as they are both unable to see the whole picture.
